VW39-03
Car 3 of the VW39 series is quite significant. It was likely finished in October 1939 being one of 3 cars, the other being car 39-1 and another unidentified VW39. Ulrich von Pidoll lists car with plate IIIA-43028 as VW39 with chassis number 1-03 and engine 38/42 being a test car belonging to Ferdinand Porsche personally. An inventory list from 02/02/1940 describes a car with plate IIIA43028 as having a “new motor” (probably 38/42). In February 1940 car VW39-03 with plate IIIA-43028 participated in a test run to St Johann in the Austrian Tyrol. Initially this plate was used on car 38/28 sunroof model and later transferred to new VW39 with the original VW38 probably disassembled and used as a reference object at the factory at Fallersleben and the Bosch company.
Luckily car VW39-03 survived the war and the post-war years making it the only known survivor from the VW39 series. It was found in 1954 by a Volkswagen dealer in Hamburg Gerhard von Raffay who restored it to his best ability at the time. The car was extensively damaged by a warehouse fire in 2011. Last year VW39-03 was presented to the public fully restored by the Prototyp Museum of Hamburg.
