You can get some interesting background stories about the car if you listen to Spike Car Radio with Magnus Walker and Hannah Elliott.  Hannah wrote about the car for the Blomberg Magazine and Porsche AG tried to buy it from the owner several times, but now they are not interested...  will that have value effects, who knows?

Anyways, guess game open until the hammer falls.

"For some reasons Porsche company is not interested or doesn't want to add this car to their history!!
Mr. Otto Mathe once took the car to Porsche company either to sell it back or to give it as a present but, the gate guard turned him down saying: Dr. Porsche is not present in his office. Which was not true. Then disappointed Mr. Otto went home and never came back! "   ICQ/av

"For Porsche, AG the Porsche Nr. 1 it's 1948 356 Roadster chassis-No. 356-001 engine-No. 356-2-034969 made of aluminum at ¨Gmund. In the first day of December of 1930 (a date we all should celebrate, Porsche created for the first time the Porsche company at the time with the complicated name of Porsche Konstruktionsbureao fur Motoren Fahrzeug Luftfahrzeug und Wasserfahrzeugbau - only for a few months because the company became  Dr.Ing.h.c.F.Porsche  in 6.03.1931.
I doubt that the type 64 was the first car to hold Porsche's name on its body as you said - because that was not suppose to happen. Originally Type 64 didn't had the Porsche tag, so Porsche nr.1 will always be the Gmund prototype cars.
The converted sawmill in Gmund, Austria produced less than 50 hand built aluminum cars prior to move to Stuttgart.

"The 356 chassis number 356/2-040, was built in 1949, and is consider to be the oldest original condition Porsche in the world by Porsche AG (not the type 64) . This chassis 040 incorporated an aluminum engine rather than magnesium and is the first use of hydraulic brakes in a Porsche.
Chassis 040 was sold in 1953 by Louise Piech (Ferdinand Porsche's daughter) to Otto Mathe. In 1996, after Mathe died, it was sold to Austrian Porsche enthusiast, Franz Rathkolb. And then in 2003 it was purchased by...cough cough...Jerry Seinfeld."

PS.
En del tror att Typ 64an skulle bli världens dyraste bil.... ICQ/be
Det blir nog väääldigt svårt att slå rekordet - Ulf Norinders gamla Ferrari GTO som hade en prislapp på 75 miljoner USDollar.

Porsche’s Type 64 Nazi Car Fails to Sell in Auction Blunder !

After what appeared to be an attempt at a joke with the starting bid, audience boos the sale of the controversial coupe.

After the biggest blunder in recent auction history, the Nazi car that Ferdinand Porsche made didn’t sell.

During Saturday night’s highly charged standing-room only auction in downtown Monterey, California, auctioneers at RM Sotheby’s premier sale dimmed the lights and showed a promotional video they had made ahead of the much-anticipated sale of the 1939 Type 64. The controversial silver coupe had been expected to sell for some $20 million before a massive mistake, or a blundered attempt at a lighthearted prank, by the auction house upset the crowded room.

“This is the only surviving example personally driven by Ferdinand Porsche,” the evening’s emcee said, then announced that bidding would open at “$30 million,” a figure that was written on the front media screen of the auction theatre. Half of the crowd laughed; the other half cheered. After rapid bidding up to “$70 million,” with the crowd on its feet, iPhones raised, and cheering, the auctioneer announced that he had meant to say “$13 million,” and then “$17 million,” rather than 30 and 70. The media screen was quickly changed to reflect the $17 million sum.

Boos and shocked yelps and shouts ensued. People walked out.

“What a joke,” said Johnny Shaughnessy, a collector from Southern California, who was in the room when it happened. “They just lost so much credibility. My father could have bought that car for $5 million years ago. It has been passed around for years, and no one wants it.”

The auction for the Type 64 was terminated in minutes, after no bids above $17 million appeared in the room.

RM Sotheby’s before it went to sale, were careful to note that the Type 64 is not technically a “Porsche.” Its engine and most of its parts were supplied by Volkswagen, with components from Fiat and other niche suppliers of the time. Ferdinand Porsche was building cars for just about everyone in Germany at the time anyway, including Daimler and Auto Union. Porsche AG wasn’t even founded until 1948—10 years after this car was built—so it surely isn’t accurate to call it a true Porsche, the line of thinking goes.

Did they on purpose not pronounce the “teen part” in the bidding? Listen to when he clearly says 50 million. What a scam!

ICQ/be  ICQ/bm
För att landa på 17 miljoner- ett bud som inte godtogs.

Och sen inte ens be om ursäkt för detta praktfiasko.. ICQ/bj

"The California auction, with bidding that went as high as $17 million, ended with the car remaining unsold. Auction sellers often have an undisclosed minimum price below which the car will not be sold. Apparently that figure, called the reserve price, was not reached.

The trouble started at the RM Sotheby's Monterey auction as soon as bidding on the Type 64 started.

In videos posted online of the event, the auctioneer called out an opening bid of $13 million but the large screen behind, which which showed the current bid price, showed $30 million.

Many in the audience gasped and others laughed. It was unclear from the auctioneer's voice that he was, in fact, saying "-teen" and not "-ty." The problem continued right through $14 million, which was displayed as $40 million then $15 million was shown on the screen as $50 million. The board read $70 million before the auctioneer realized the trouble just behind him and asked for it to be corrected.

Some in the audience booed as the price was corrected. After that, the bids stopped coming and the sale was hammered to a close at $17 million dollars.

It was an honest mistake, RM Sotheby's said in a statement, and it wasn't staged. "We take pride in conducting our world-class auctions with integrity and we take our responsibility to our clients very seriously. This was in no way a joke or stunt on behalf of anyone at RM Sotheby's, rather an unfortunate misunderstanding amplified by excitement in the room."

  You'll get one too...

It is really sad that the failed auction stole the spotlight from this engineering marvel.  I might not be the "first" Porsche, but speed achieved by 80-year old Hungarian aircraft (lightweight) craftsmanship should be celebrated.   If you haven't seen Chris Harris piece on it, please do: https://youtu.be/HaDWPBco07w

Jaha ja... ICQ/bm

Chaos erupts as a rare Porsche seems to auction for a record-shattering $70 million

1. The practice of Chandelier Bidding, otherwise known as Buy-In bidding, Rafter bidding, Off-the-wall bidding, Consecutive bidding, Vendor bidding, or Consignor bidding, is the practice where "the auctioneer pretends to take a bid from the room in order to encourage bidding, create the appearance of demand, or to push bidding closer to the reserve price". In other words, it’s a fake bid.

2. This is the practice, especially by high-end art auctioneers, of raising false bids at crucial times in the bidding in order to create the appearance of greater demand or to extend bidding momentum for a work on offer. To call out these nonexistent bids auctioneers might fix their gaze at a point in the auction room that is difficult for the audience to pin down. The practice is frowned upon in the industry. In the United States, chandelier bidding is not illegal. In fact, an auctioneer may bid up the price of an item to the reserve price, which is a threshold below which the consignor may refuse to sell the item. However, the auction house is required to disclose this information.
